What is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker?
An AASW Accredited Mental Health Social worker (AMHSW) is a recognised mental health professional who can provide services under Medicare.
AMHSWs have completed additional training in evidence-based therapies and receive ongoing professional supervision. To retain their accreditation, AMHSWs must fulfil ongoing professional development and supervision requirements to ensure quality of care.
How much will my appointment cost?
Individual therapy with an AMHSW costs $210 per 50-minute session. If you access services through a mental health treatment plan, you will be eligible for a Medicare rebate. The current Medicare rebate for an AMHSW is $85.20.
Other funding sources for services may include private pay, NDIS and Employee Assistance Programs.

Medicare, MHTP and rebates.. Can you explain?
A GP can refer you to Mindful Connection Therapy Launceston through a Mental Health Treatment Plan, giving you access to 10 Medicare rebates per calendar year. This allows you to receive a rebate of $85.20 per appointment for ten appointments throughout the year.
To access this plan, you'll need to schedule an appointment with your GP and request a Mental Health Treatment Plan. This plan initially provides rebates for up to six sessions. After your sixth session (or the number listed on your plan), you'll need to book a follow-up appointment with your GP to request a re-referral, which will give you access to an additional four rebates.
Will private health cover the cost of my appointment?
Each private health insurer has their own policy regarding coverage for mental health services. It's important to review your extras cover to determine what is included and to contact your insurer directly for more information. If you have extras cover through St Luke's or Bupa in Tasmania, you may be eligible for coverage.
